This note concerns a change in the leadership of the Southeast ARES group.
After several years as the Emergency Coordinator (EC) for the Southeast ARES group Mike Urich, KA5CVH, has decided to step down as EC. I have been asked to step up and accept the position of EC for Southeast Harris County ARES. I have accepted that challenge and look forward to working with each of you to continue to build the Southeast ARES group.
I want to thank Mike for all of the hard work that he has done as the EC. The position of EC has a lot of responsibilities. Mike has been instrumental in getting the county ARES web pages up and running along with developing a database of ARES members. Mike will continue to be a valuable member of our Southeast ARES group and he will be helping me through this transition period.
Please allow me to introduce myself. I was first licensed in 1965 as a Novice with a call sign of N5NOH. Later I passed the General exam and was awarded the call sign of WA5QOQ. When I went off to college in 1968 I had to let my license expire and dropped out of ham radio for about 30 years. I reentered the hobby in 1995 and earned the Extra class license with the call sign AD5CQ. I am interested in building antennas and using my amateur radio skills and abilities to help other people. I am a member of both the Clear Lake Amateur Radio and JSC Amateur Radio clubs.
There is a steep learning curve for being an EC. I am expecting to be communicating with you a lot over the next several weeks and months. I like using email but if you prefer to call me on the phone or make a personal visit those are OK too. My contact information is:
Home phone: 281-484-2949
Work phone: 281-335-2147
Cell phone: 281-910-1132
Email: ad5cq at arrl.net
Favorite repeaters: 146.860 (-)(100.0) and 146.640 (-)(no tone)
We are now in hurricane season. Please make sure that you have done the following:
Make a personal plan of what you will do in the event of a hurricane entering our area.
Check your radio equipment for charged batteries, fix broken connectors or do what ever you need to get your station ready to support an emergency event.
If you plan to leave the area during a hurricane then please consider leaving early to avoid the “rush”.
Field Day:
I will be with the Clear Lake Amateur Radio Club at the Sylvan Rodriguez Park on Clear Lake City Blvd. Please consider coming out to this location during Field Day and give me a chance to meet you and talk with you about Southeast ARES.
Weekly nets:
Please consider being a part of our weekly net each Tuesday evening at 8:00 pm on the JSC repeater, 146.640 (-) (no tone). We need to build up our net activity. This is an excellent opportunity to ask questions about ARES and get answers to technical questions about ARES and ham radio.
This email listserver:
I am unable to know just who is a part of this email list. That is an issue that I am working on. In the meantime I am asking you to respond to this note and let me know:
1. That you want to continue to be a member of the Southeast ARES (please say “yes”)
2. What are your general plans in the event of a hurricane? Do you plan to evacuate or is there a served agency that you plan to support or just plan to ride it out?
3. What is the best way of contacting you? What is an alternate method of contact for you?
This has been a long note and I have much more to share with you. I expect to be sending more emails later. Please contact me if you have any questions or if I can be of service to you in support of ham radio or ARES.
--George Fletcher, AD5CQ
