Is there anyone that wants to be on a team? Is there anyone that wants to
be a team leader?

This looks like a family unit could participate if one of the family members
is a ham radio operator.

Please let me know.

ARES EC's

Mark your calendars and reserve April 18th and 19th, 2009 for the BP MS-150
bike ride from Houston to Austin. Please identify your team leaders for
this event and be prepared to name them at the District 14 leadership
meeting on November 17, 2008. We need a total of nine teams with four
members to each team. Only two members of each team need to be amateur
radio operators. The 10th Saturday break point will be handled by the
Waller ARES team again. Here is a brief synopsis of what we will be doing
this year.

SAG STOP COMMUNICATIONS

District 14 ARES will supply the SAG stop communication units for all SAG
stops. We will not be responsible for traffic control as part of the break
point controllers. That is a CERT responsibility. It is suggested that
four member teams be developed with at least two amateurs for each team.
The team leader will be SAG STOP communications for initial contact by buses
and vans. One member will be the GROUND unit who will direct vans and buses
where to park and assist in the loading of passengers and bicycles. One
member will be the SKED, or scheduler of bicyclists waiting to ride the
buses and vans. This person will maintain a list of rider numbers on a
first in, first out basis. This will allow riders to eat, drink and use the
restroom without losing their place in line. The GROUND unit will
coordinate with the SKED to load bicyclists and record the SAG van or bus
number. It is important to record the number of riders and the SAG vans.
This will be used for planning purposes to determine the necessary resources
for future events. It will also record which SAG vans and buses are
actually picking up riders. The fourth member of the team will be a relief
person to assist others where necessary. The SAG STOP communication teams
will use MURS radios.

BREAKPONT COMMUNICATIONS

District 14 ARES will coordinate and provide the amateur radio "break point
communications" on Saturday, April 18th. Sunday, the 19th is the
responsibility of the amateur groups from Austin. However, be prepared to
assume this responsibility on Sunday if necessary. The addition of this
responsibility should not impact significantly on your assignment. Several
have performed this task previously without difficulty. The assignment of
two amateurs to each four person team should accommodate this task.

TRANSPORTATION/LODGING/MEALS

Your teams have the option of traveling with the CERT teams in MS vans or
providing their own transportation. Lodging will be provided by the MS 150
on Saturday, April 18, 2009 in LaGrange. Food will be provided at the
breakpoints and LaGrange. All of these items will be covered in detail in
upcoming months.

PLANNING, TRAINING and COORDINATION

Planning for the MS-150 will continue over the next few months. The first
"drive the route" day is scheduled for the steering committee members on
October 25. You are not expected to attend this event.

The "break point" amateur communications will be coordinated by Mike
Hardwick with the communication committee. In coordination with Marilyn and
Don Holkan, Jeff Walter will be in charge of all break point management
coordination, which includes the SAG STOP communication units. The SAG vans
are the responsibility of others. You will be given specific planning
objectives and guidelines prior to the event. These will specify the
requirements of your assignment. However, each site is unique and the
individual team leaders will coordinate with the break point managers as to
the most efficient strategies and tactics for your particular site.

The first step is the identification of the team leaders for the four person
teams in November. Second, the identification of the team members should be
completed by 31 December, 2008. Teams will be provided training after that
time.

Our communications task is a logistical function. It will be coordinated
and trained for by a number of planning entities. However, upon deployment
you will be part of a wide area command at each break point, coordinating
with the break point manager. As Joe Gadus describes it, "it is like being
a medic for the D-Day landing". "You receive your training under medical
supervision, but are deployed in support of the troops by being assigned to
a company or platoon". There will be unity of command. Your team members
will report to the team leader, the leader will coordinate with the break
point manager, but report to Jeff Walter.
