Subject: Echolink and Airmail Class November 1
I am sending this to both my ARES and TEAC distribution lists.
At Monday's ARES monthly meeting, it was decided that Richard, KD5URB, and
Robert, KD5YVQ, will hold present the postponed Winlink/Airmail training
session after the next TEAC Club meeting on Saturday, November 1st, probably
at Robert's shop on Northpark Drive. Details will be determined at the club
meeting.
Richard put together the following e-mail in preparation for this session.
Please read and heed it, so you get the most benefit out of this training.
Bring your gear if your are set up to run Winlink and want to check it out
or need help in setting it up.
Hurricane Ike showed the value of being able to communicate via e-mail over
ham radio. This session will show you how.
Also, thanks again to Robert, KD5YVQ, and Aaron, N5AMS, for a very
enlightening presentation on IRLP and Echolink. See attachment for info on
Echolink and go to http://www.irlp.net/ for info on IRLP.

Chuck

Chuck,
First I have attached a short presentation about Echolink to complement the
training that Aaron and Robert provided at the ARES meeting. The
information is from the ARRL web site WWW.ARRL.org.
Second, I am providing a link (http://www.winlink.org/node/23) for everyone
to get signed up with for additional training for airmail if they already
have a working system and wish to see the more of the capabilities of WL2K.
It is appropriately titled "WL2K For Dummies". I have taken the course and
recommend it. You can proceed at your own pace and I will be available for
support if needed. Those planning on attending the airmail class are also
encouraged to sign up.
Thirdly and Finally, I am providing a list of equipment needed for a typical
Airmail system. You need:
1. 1 each 2 meter transceiver (w/data port makes things easier), and
2. TNC (Kantronics KPC3(+) preferred but AEA PK232 with with current
software or MFJ products
3. all the interconnection cables between TNC, transceiver and computer.
Don't forget the power harnesses for the TNC and transceiver.
4. A portable computer with serial port or USB to serial converter with any
Windows program newer that Windows 95, and preferrably not Vista. Airmail
will work on both Windows 95 and Vista, but there is a lot of extra stuff
that has to be done. I will have one computer to use if you cannot find a
portable machine.
5. Portable power supply, either AC or battery. I'll also bring a suitable
12 VDC (nominal) power supply to run units.
Hopefully this will get everyone enough time to assemble the necessary
equipment and cabling. Again I will be around to answer questions and
assist were necessary. The more that can be done hardware wise in advance,
the faster the class will go.
